The SMHP Research Academy is designed for SMHP members who want to deepen their understanding of research and actively contribute to advancing metabolic health. It provides step-by-step training, expert mentorship, and hands-on support to help members create, conduct, and publish research studies while developing the skills to critically evaluate existing literature.
A comprehensive training program guides members through the research process with ten self-paced modules covering study design, IRB approval, data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation. These modules include downloadable notes and presentations, and members who complete the program receive a CME certificate to document their achievement.
For those who want additional guidance, the Academy’s Research Mentorship program pairs members with experienced researchers who provide one-on-one support in study design, methodology, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The goal is to help members bring their research to completion and ultimately get published.
Supporting Publication and Expanding Research in Metabolic Health
A key function of the Research Academy is supporting members in publishing their work in the Journal of Metabolic Health (JMH) and other academic journals. The Academy provides training videos and structured guidance to walk members through the publication process, making it more accessible for those new to research. By equipping members with essential research and writing skills, the Academy helps grow the body of scientific evidence supporting lifestyle interventions for metabolic health. Every research contribution, whether large or small, strengthens the field and enhances the ability of practitioners to apply evidence-based approaches in real-world settings.
To further support members, the Academy will soon offer access to the SMHP REDCap database, a tool for organizing and analyzing research data efficiently.
Quarterly Journal Club: Interactive Research Discussions
A vital component of the SMHP Research Academy is the Quarterly Journal Club, an opportunity for members to refine their research skills through engaging, interactive discussions. Unlike traditional journal clubs, the Open Mic format encourages active participation, allowing members to analyze research design, methodology, and data interpretation in a collaborative environment. Using the SMHP Research Journal Club Evaluation Tool, developed by Dr. Melanie Tidman, members gain the ability to assess the quality of research articles and apply findings to clinical practice.
The most recent Journal Club session was held on March 8th via Zoom, and recordings are available to members on the SMHP website. Each session provides a hands-on learning experience where clinicians, researchers, and metabolic health advocates engage in meaningful discussions about the strengths and limitations of research studies.
